Great to see everyone at the conference. Like Sacha, who points out the Fed is an organisation 'of and for' detached youth workers, I think we have something really special, with a growing energy and power.
In relation to my presentation, should anyone still be a little confused about my theory (and practice) of 'pro-social interventions' take a look at this:

…just back from a weekend at the National Detached Youth Work conference - the annual event organised by and for detached youth work practitioners, educationalists and critical thinkers. I’m feeling inspired with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and motivation to learn more and take action - what a gift!
There's a joy that comes from meeting with fellow professionals you feel have a similar experience, struggles and passions, feel an intrinsic connection and empathy with, engage in dialogue to exa…

PART ONE
Darryl the Dastardly
In many ways, we could not have been more fortunate - though it did not seem like that at the time. We had taken a huge step, and trained as professional foster carers for children over the age of 12 years, who had such a difficult personal history that no home could be found for them.
The first boy we experienced was Darryl. We had opted for boys because we were told they were easier – so, thank goodness we did not choose girls. It was not a stroll in the park, an…

Theatre is a highly effective way of reaching and engaging marginalised young people. It can stimulate dialogue and discussion which can help them, and those working with them, develop positive strategies and actions. For the Flavasum Trust this, in particular, means moving them away from carrying knives and using weapons to solve disputes.
The Flavasum Collection invitation.…

16th September saw the first meeting of the reformed London Detached Forum. The meeting was held at Camden Detached Project, 218 Eversholt Street, NW1 1BD (close to Euston, Kings Cross or Mornington Crescent Stations)
In an interesting meeting we looked at a variety of subjects including the demands placed upon detached work, the challenge of reaching targets, and the integration of youth services.
What became clear is that Detached work is viewed very differently across the Borough’s, but tha…

Anybody out there keen to become involved in an action research project on the integration processes of young immigrants? You will need to be working with young migrants and amenable to participating in a series of seminars with workers from other European countries over the next couple of years. There is a need to get a group of about 20 workers from the UK together in order that we can participate. Funding available. Please contact me, c/o the Fed. and I'll send you the info. Graeme

Listen to this link to hear our ally Richard Pring extol the virtues of detached youth work. Its available on Listen Again, but only until the 9th of July:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8129000/8129976.stm
If that doesn't work, the manual route is to find Radio 4's Today Programme Listen Again facility. Go to Thursday (2nd July) and you'll find Professor Pring's contribution at 0749 hours.
Hope you find it.

In the last few weeks we've been circulating an Open Letter in defence of an 'emancipatory and democratic youth work'. which, I believe, chimes with the outlook of the Federation. To read the Open Letter and keep abreast of developments e.g. regional meetings are being organised, please visit the newly created Blog at http;//indefenceofyouthwork.wordpress.com
If you're in tune with the tone of the Letter, please let us know and circulate it as widely as possible.
Together it's time to call the…

Hi Folks,
Just a short note to say that our book
Work with Young People: Theory and Policy for Practice has been published by Sage. It covers key themes and developments, including:
- how we understand the lives of young people
- the principles that underpin work with young people
- the policy and practice in a wide ra…
