Andy Hillier writes '...should youth workers fight to keep the ethos of voluntary participation intact? I would argue not. Like every other sector, youth work must move with the times. And this will involve redefining some established principles.' CYP Now - see the full article below.
The federation for detached youth works feel that voluntary participation is vital to the integrity of the work and losing this would mean losing youth work. What do you think?
Perhaps this is case of remembering that the vast majority (one would hope) of detached youth work is street-based. Ask yourself this question: "is it possible to do street-based youth work without voluntary participation?"
If we begin to force young people to engage with us as youth workers then we no longer become youth workers but social workers. We as workers will then be forced to apply for these fancy titled jobs with social work ethos. With regard to detached workers where will this forced interaction come to an end? WIll we end up riding black horses around the streets luring young people into cages with lollipops like the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?
Unfortunately I can only see this getting a whole lot worse before we witness any improvement and this comes from an optimist!
